KSA #7-- Student Needs
Description: students’ needs for physical, social, cultural and psychological security. They know how to engage students in creating effective classroom routines. They know how and when to apply a variety of management strategies that are in keeping with the situation, and that provide for minimal disruptions to students’ learning
Getting to know your students is the best way you can meet their needs. In PSIII, I came into the classroom halfway through the year, where relationships and connections between teachers and students, teachers and parents, and students with other students had already been made. So I chose to do 2 things to help make my transition run smoothly for everyone. In December, before I started, I sent home a "Meet The Teacher" letter, so students and parents would know exactly who would be coming into the classroom come January. The letter introduced who I was, what my interests were, and how I was excited about being in their classroom! The next thing I did, when I returned in January, was I sent home a Student Survey form for the parents to fill out about their child. It asked parents to talk about their child's strengths, weaknesses and goals, who their child was; what makes them motivated, what makes them shut down, what are some of their most favourite things.
This helped me get to know the students needs very quickly! It aided in creating a positive rapport between the parents and I, and ultimately it helped foster amazing relationships bewteen the students and I, which I can say was one of my strongest suits in my practicums!
University Courses that have supplemented my knowledge, skills, and attributes for Student Needs:
EDUC 2500: Orientation into Teaching
EDUC 3502: Educational Psychology
EDUC 3602: The Educational Psychology of Exceptional Learners
EDUC 3603: Social Context of Schooling
EDUC 3500: Professional Semester I Practicum
EDUC 3600: Professional Semester II Practicum
EDUC 4571: Elementary Education Internship (PS III)
