Philosophy of Education.
I love to laugh, learn and teach. If I can do them all at the same time, then I am only lucky girl!
Life Long Learning-- Never Stop.
"Commit yourself to lifelong learning. The most valuable asset you will ever have is your mind and what you put into it." --Brian Tracy Lifelong learning is ongoing. Whether it is within the walls of my classroom, or outside of it, it is important to equip students with the desire to be lifelong learners. It is my goal as an educator, and as a role model, to help the students open their eyes and ears to the opportunities inside and outside the classroom. I believe that you learn something new everyday, and it is important to seize those moments! Understanding that learning is never ending creates ideal life long learners, and this would be my ultimate goal as an educator. I want to instil a passion in my students so that they want to learn and want to take full advantage of the learning opportunities all around them.
Setting Up Students for Success-- Differentiation.
As an educator, I believe it is so important for students to be set up for success. It is very important in my role as an educator to make sure I meet the needs of all of my students as they differ in ability. Differentiation is very imparative, and at first class may seem daunting, but the best way for you to know how to differentiate, is knowing your students. By knowing your students, you will learn so much about them, including exactly what they need to succeed.
Students First-- That's Why I Am Here.
I believe that it is more important to teach to the students than teaching to the curriculum. If the basic needs of the student are not being met, then their ability to learn is hindered. Students need a place where they can feel loved, safe and that they matter; which is the notion that fosters a Positive Learning Environment. In my classroom, it is student focused and everything else surrounds it. It is imperative that my students are excited and comfortable in the classroom each and everyday. I have seen it first hand in some of my practicums, that as a teacher we may be one of the omly caring adults in some of these kids' lifes. When you create a classroom that is loving, and welcoming, you will be surprised at what your students are capable of doing.
Making Learning Meaningful-- Centering the Classroom Around Relevant Information
A classroom that is inviting, engaging and centered around learning is something I strive for as a teacher. I believe that a student is going to much more engaged in learning if they are leaning about something they are interested in. Knowing the Alberta Curriculum is very important, but what is more important is knowing how to take that curriculum and tailoring it to the needs and learning styles of the students. Students will get much more out of a lesson if it is something they can relate to or something they know they can use in their daily lives. It is has been my experience, as both a student, and as a teacher, that students of all ages ask the question "why do I need to know this? I am never going to use this is real life!" It is important to find real-life situatuations that are relevant to students so they have a desire to learn.
