Summary of my Experience.
Brooks Composite High
My PSII may have been the most unique practicum of all. I was placed at 2 different schools. In the afternoons I taught at Brooks Composite High School (BCHS). I taught a Social 20-1 class where we explored the topic "To what extent should internationalism be pursued?" For this social studies class I tried the approach of Inquiry based learning. I would light a fire under them about a topic and get them passionate to pursue and investigate it. I also taught a very interesting French class, in which, not only did I have French 10, 20 and 30 within one class, but I also had students on the 3 year, and the 9 year French Programs. This taught me to be flexible for whatever situation may come my way, and to differentiate to my diverse group of learners. I was provided with many challenges here that helped mold me into a teacher who can differentiate for her students of different learning needs. Sample Lesson.-- Social 20-1I wanted my students to investigate Social Studies. I wanted them to be aware of what events are happening in our world and be willing to ask questions about it all. When talking about Internationalism the topic of Global Issues came up. I presented the students with 1 billion dollars to pick an important topic and defend why their topic deserved the 1 billion dollars to help make their issue better. The students picked a topic they were passionate about (water issues, sweat shops, electronic waste etc.) and then they created a conference display to try and persuade me, and the other groups why their issue deserved the money.
The students worked exceptionally hard on this project and were so thrilled to share what they learned. |
Central Primary School
In the mornings, before heading over to BCHS, I started off at Central Primary School. A quaint primary (Pre-K to Grade 1) school in Brooks. Here I taught a group of rambunctious and loveable grade ones who were so eager to try everything. I started off the morning by having the kids fill in their agendas, and feeding them a breakfast snack of fruit. It wasn't much but it was all some of these kids had. The most important lesson I learned at this school was that not all kids come from the same home life, and that I have a group of kids who not only have very diverse learning needs, but they are also diverse in how their basic needs are being met. Personal and meaningful relationships with these grade 1 students made a difference in my teaching. Once we fed them a little breakfast, they were much more attentive and ready to learn. Sample Lesson.-- Math 1In math we explored the units Measurement and Capacity. These units were fun and allowed me to have the kids move around the room a lot. Once I got to know these kids, I learned that their attention span was short and I needed to have them change what they were doing frequently. We did a lot of kinaesthetic and tactile work in math. We found different objects around the room and compared their lengths and widths etc. They enjoyed being in charge of finding their own objects from around the classroom.
