KSA #13-- Community Involvement
Description: Student learning is enhanced through the use of home and community and community resources, They know how to indentify resources relevent to teaching and learning objectives and how to incorporate these resources into their teaching and students' learning.
In PSI I taught the Grade 6 Social Studies curriculum, where we talked about provincial government. I could only provide a certain depth to the questions my students students were asking about what really happens in the Legislative Assembly. I took it upon myself to try and go deeper. I looked into who was their Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) (Ian Donovan--Little Bow Constituency). I found his contact information, and asked if there was anyway he would be able to answer some of the questions my students had. His secretary returned my email quickly an said that Ian would be able to do one better and attend one of my Social Studies classes to talk with my kids.
The kids were over the moon excited to have Ian in our classroom, and peppered him with questions left and right! They each had to come up with 3 solid questions; 2 questions that directly correlated with government, and 1 personal question they had for Ian (They were excited once they found out he was a farm boy!) It was really neat to see them get so thrilled and passionate about government
